"The House at the End of Hope Street" is one of my favorite books ever! The author, Menna van Praag, weaves beautifully written prose, deep characters and brilliant, engrossing plots into a story I did not want to (or could not) put down. My wife had read the book before me and told me as much, so I grabbed her copy and began to read. Some nights when I'd come home from work I'd gently ask, "Do you need me to do anything, because once I start reading, once I go into the world of 'Hope Street' I don't want to come out." And whenever I'd hit certain plot points or when a mystery was revealed, I'd yell into the next room to her, "HOLY CRAP! I CAN'T BELIEVE-"!

This book got me excited and truly invested. "The House at the End of Hope Street" is a magical house that houses a woman in her most desperate time. We follow three new residents to the house and we learn that they are not the first to ever reside there, nor will they be the last.

If you like magic, you'll like this. If you like drama, you'll like this. If you like mysteries, you'll like this. If you like love, you'll like this. If you like all four of those things you'll LOVE this book!

I hope this book is the first in a series of many. I would read any book by Menna van Praag. I would read any story about "The House at the End of Hope Street". I want more. What came before this book and what came after? I'd read them all! But until then I've got this one to read again!

I purchased this book after seeing a favorable reference to the author made by Sarah Addison Allen on Facebook.

Menna van Praag has crafted a beautiful - sometimes heart wrenching - story of loneliness, awkwardness, and second chances. The magic she's weaved throughout the pages of the book keep the reader hopeful, waiting for favorite characters to finally land in a kinder life, something better than they've been served by people and circumstances that ultimately brought them to the house on Hope Street.

Not everyone gets a happy ending, and not everyone gets what's coming to them, but like real life, that's just the way of it. However, in this beautiful tale, there is magic and good work afoot. Sometimes hope is rekindled and good people once again find their way.

If you enjoy author Sarah Addison Allen's stories, you will likely enjoy this book too.
I Loved this book! It was Magic! The house itself that enveloped those that lived there and the portraits of real women that we know from our history ... that squabbled and commented amongst themselves while hanging in the walls. I was totally captured by the fantasy and the imagery. The stories of the women who found this house because they needed to where perhaps a bit mundane. However, the personal journey they each took while staying there was inspiring and gave much food for thought. At the conclusion of the book, we get a short history of the strong and independent women who were the backdrop to this delightful book. These women were real and had existed in real life, like Virginia Wolf and Florence Nightingale. I recommend this book with all my heart. You will find the Lioness inside you as you read.
This is a "can't put it down" "can't wait to pick it up" book. It's delightful. I fell in love with the characters and each of their personal journeys of self discovery. The plot has such wonderful twists and turns - I love being surprised when I read a book. Author Menna van Praag's writing is melodic. If a brilliant song could be a book - this book would be that song. As an avid reader, feeling fully satisfied after reading a book is a rare experience. This book is like the perfect meal that ends with that perfect bite. Get this book! It's magically delicious!
I first heard about this book when Sarah Addison Allen posted it as a recommendation on her Facebook page. I adore her books, but I've read all four of her novels and have been impatiently waiting for her next one to be released. When I saw van Praag being compared to Addison Allen, I was happy, but I also hesitated, because I've found that often authors being compared to someone more famous are not as good as their more famous counterparts.

The verdict I prefer Addison Allen, but I'm still glad I read this book. It's an easy read, endearing and feel-good but not without hardship and struggle. Some of the magical elements of the house seem a little awkward, like the way notes appear. I just feel like the trite motivational sayings appearing in front of the inhabitants doesn't add anything to the story. On the other hand, the talking pictures, the ghost in the kitchen, the caretaker who serves hot chocolate rather than coffee or tea, the magic garden ... all those are charming touches that make the book enjoyable.

I've also got to hand it to van Praag for completely surprising me at the end. At the beginning of the book, the house reveals that the caretaker will soon need to find someone else to take over her duties. And the whole time, I thought it was so obvious who was going to take over those duties. I was wrong, and that's all I'll say on the matter to avoid spoiling anything.

This is a feel-good book, so don't read it unless you're in that kind of mood. But if that's what you're in the mood for, then I recommend this book.
